SUMMARY:The American Revolution in the Gulf South by Dr. Max Grivno
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Max Grivno will present The American Revolution in the Gulf South on Monday April 20 at 6pm at Mississippi University for Women. \nThe history of the American Revolution along the Gulf South is seldom told. Although most of the Europeans who called the region were sympathetic to the British — or at least hoped to remain neutral — the conflict soon engulfed the territory of what would\, in time\, become Louisiana\, Mississippi and Florida. \nDr. Grivno will examine how the American Revolution transformed the Gulf South. How the Americans\, British and Spanish vied for control of the Mississippi River and Gulf seaports\, and how the Choctaws and Chickasaws struggled to preserve their homelands by courting the rival powers. He will discusses the consequences of the Revolution for the people of the Gulf Coast. In the aftermath of the war\, the Spanish and the Americans vied to control Natchez and the territory around present-day Vicksburg\, while native confederacies like the Choctaw and Chickasaw grappled with the rising power of the United States.​ \nDr. Grivno is a Professor of History at the University of Southern Mississippi. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Christian Pinnen will present Spanish Dons in Colonial Mississippi: The Spanish roots of Mississippi’s Cotton Kingdom on Thursday\, April 16 at 12 noon at the downtown branch of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System. \nSpain has a short\, but important part in Mississippi’s history. Between 1779 and 1798\, Spanish administrators sought to wrangle profits and people in small outpost\, most prominently Natchez\, along the Mississippi River. Enforcing Spanish laws and customs in a polyglot and largely Anglo-American population proved treacherous and created economic and social dynamics that gave rise to more than one chaotic episode as people tried to gain influence and power along the Mississippi.​ \nDr. Pinnen is a Professor in the Department of History and Political Science at Mississippi College. He has published two books in 2021: Complexion of Empire in Natchez and Colonial Mississippi. But don’t take our word for it – come see for yourself! \nFriday\, April 10 | Blues with a Side of Soul\nJoin us for “Blues with a Side of Soul” on Friday\, April 10 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Kyia King and Company will perform. Soul food plate lunches available for purchase. \nPre-Order Your Plate Lunch Today! \nSaturday\, April 11 | Catfish in the Alley and Artisans Alley\nVisit the world-famous “Catfish Alley\,” where legendary bluesmen\, such as Howlin’ Wolf\, Bukka White and Big Joe Williams\, got their start. Here nationally recognized artists\, such as B.B. King\, Duke Ellington\, Little Richard\, Louis Armstrong and James Brown\, performed alongside Mississippi’s blues guitarists. Catfish in the Alley event headliners will wow the crowds with their original songs and reimagined takes on blues classics\, so come early and leave late. Music starts at 12:00 with Dorothy McClung Lewis and The Anointed Songbirds. At 1:15\, Honeyboy and Boots take the stage following by James “Super Chikan” Johnson at 2:15. Our headliner\, Jimmy D. Lane will play 3:30 until 5:00. Food vendors and artisans will also be onsite.
